Confidence is something that can be difficult to define, and even harder to fake! In this world of selfies where we are constantly bombarded with images of perfect models and actors, it can be hard to feel good about just being yourself. However, if you can accomplish it the benefits of being confident are hard to deny. Confidence in what you’re wearing can be a great place to start, and if you’re confident in your first impressions and how you look you can feel liberated to take other risks in your life. Here are some quick ways to feel and look great every day!
Find What Works
There’s a reason that many prominent women have what is practically a uniform. They’ve found what works for them, and they’ve embraced it. If you love cute conservative dresses or finding the most amazing pair of jeans, there is no reason you shouldn’t buy one in every color. Former President Barack Obama often said that he chose to wear a variation on the same thing every day because he simply didn’t have time to think about it. No one is saying you have to wear a full suit day in and day out, but having those go-to pieces that you know work for you can allow your real self to shine through.
Be Comfortable
The idea of being comfortable to promote confidence doesn’t mean that every outfit should feel like sweats and your favorite old t-shirt. Being comfortable in the context of enhancing your confidence means feeling appropriate and knowing exactly what is or is not showing. Everyone makes a mistake and over or under dresses occasionally, but nothing is worse than being in a job interview, an important meeting or even preschool pick-up and suddenly realizing that you’re showing somewhat more than you intended. Whatever level of modesty you like is up to you, but it’s important that you know exactly what it looks like before leaving the house.
Know (and Express!) Your Personal Style
Being confident is all about being you! There’s no need to be stodgy or uptight just to feel confident. If you like loud accessories, bright lipstick, high heels or flowered blouses all of those are great choices, as long as they mesh with your personal style and lifestyle. It can be difficult to figure out what your personal style really is, but an easy way to start is to pick a few of your favorite clothing pieces and a few favorite accessories and think about what they have in common. Do you love the pearls from your grandmother? Then feel free to wear them every day, and build your personal style around them!
Emphasize the Positive
No one loves everything about themselves, but whatever your perceived faults are, you shouldn’t dress to minimize your faults. Instead, dress to emphasize your positive attributes. If you love the color of your eyes, always wear mascara or eyeshadow to highlight them. If you’ve got great arms shift dresses are perfectly appropriate for the most offices. If you know you’re showing off your best assets then feeling confident is a breeze.
Stay Off the Bandwagon
Trends can be tricky, even for the most fashionable amongst us. If you don’t consider yourself to be an advanced fashionista, then stay away from particularly daring or difficult trends. It can be tempting to go all out and purchase something of the moment for a special event, but the reality is that you’ll simply look the way you feel, and that might be very uncomfortable! There are some risks that are worth taking, but going full steam ahead with multiple trends at once is a fool’s errand. If you must go trendy, pick one new fad to follow, and integrate it into your personal style. Your look shouldn’t be completely different every season. Unless of course, that is your look!
